Yep, just pinched myself to make sure it was real! The performance today was at 3 pm, so we were home in plenty of time to grill out and have dinner at HOME! We were awake and out the door by 8 am this morning. Abbi had her first communion retreat at church until 11:30 am. I did not have to play with the orchestra this morning...they gave us the services off because of all our playing for the shows. That was a nice relief!
Abbi and I showed up quite early for the performances today, her team gets the rest of the performances. She did really well too! I can watch her for part of the time....
She comes out after the opening number and I spotted her quickly and could see her a great deal of the time when I was not playing. She did great.
SO...my Passion Play funnies....
One of the miracles in my favorite song (THIS IS OUR GOD)....is when Jesus turns the water into wine for the wedding feast. They have these two huge clay carafes that he prays over, then two ladies step forward to find the miracle. They pour from one jug to another....first comes water, then it turns to wine. Well, there is some contraption inside that holds that "wine"....and then it releases it. WELL, of the 4 performances so far, in two of them the wine splashed all over the place and our oboe player got all wet. We couldn't help but giggle tonight! There is music playing, so it isn't like we just laughed out loud!
Yesterday in the first performance, the dove that NOAH releases usually flies to this light on the balcony and lands in a cage with its food. It has done it perfectly so many times now. The light is very bright so it knows where to go. BUT, yesterday as soon as they let the dove go, they turned the light off and it veered off to the left and was circling the balcony trying to find its food. They couldn't turn the bird's light back on, so they took a spotlight and shone it on the ceiling in between using the spotlight for the stage, and the bird was caught. OH WOW! All because someone shut the light off early once the bird was already flying. Thankfully it has done the job perfect since then, and so has the light!
At the very first evening of performance, the disciples open the show by a conversation. The first three to speak sounded so "country hick", it just struck me as a little funny. In another part of the first performance, the person speaking is supposed to say JESUS in conversation about what he was doing, but the gal said PILATE, but she worked her way around it and it was ok.
Last night, we were doing one of the few songs we did last year as well. It is a different person singing it this year. The conductor saw that the people taking the cross down needed a bit more time...so without much of a cue to us he repeated an entire phrase and the singer and all of us covered what could have been weird! Good thing we know that particular piece extremely well!
There is one group of stage children who are on the stage a lot more than the rest...and they sit on the steps in the center of the stage during several scenes. No children have speaking parts. Well, the first performance, several of those girls sat down on the steps and forgot to pull their dresses down lol. Lisa Parker....who is the drama coach and also sings a few solos in the show, she goes over to them and sits next to them and shows them how to sit. She had shown them the other night at rehearsal, but she had to remind then again. It is NOT a big deal because the background crowd is all interacting quietly as speaking parts and solo songs are going on.....so unless you knew, you would just think it was normal interactions between people part of the show. The kids all wear white tight capris or shorts under the costumes so it is not a big deal, but it was funny!
I am sure there was more funny stuff that I missed.
The shows yesterday and especially today were near sold out. SO many people have come to see the story of Jesus's last few days. Today MANY of my students were there and came down to see me afterwards...so sweet.
Dave and Libbi came today to see us.
WHEW.....I am tired, but I am happy and this again is exactly the place I need to be in this world! Playing with this orchestra is beyond words. Having the music arranger write solos on me is magical. Being a part of something so powerful...
Two more nights of performances and the folder will close on the 2009 MPP. They will begin work on next years immediately.
Both girls have their costumes for the dance recital....cute beyond words and I will get some pictures loaded on here next weekend when life is considerably slower!
